Alan Cooper, Landscape Architect (MLA), is the founder of Outer Space, qualified in both natural scientific and arts background. With extensive experience in public and private work, he worked for the Sandton local authority as Principal Landscape Architect for 10 years before starting Outer Space Planning and Design.
In his role as Principal Landscape Architect, he was responsible for landscaping a large portion of Sandton's CBD and main access routes, civic buildings and recreation facilities and for the development of the Sandton Open Space Plan.
Alan has been in private practice since 1994. He has a B.Sc. in Forestry, a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture and studied sculpture at UNISA. He is also a registered member of SACLAP Reg. No. 98083, Institute of Landscape Architecture, and a member of the Institute of Impact Assessment.

Maryke van der Merwe, Director
Maryke is a professional landscape architect (ML.Prof) with
just over 6 years of landscape architectural
experience. She obtained her Masters degree (MUD) in urban
design in 2021.
The scope of her work experience includes a wide variety of landscape architectural design and planning work from environmental planning, visual assessments, large scale master planning
and urban design, down to a detailed garden design level.
Maryke has worked in various provinces in South Africa such as KZN, Gauteng and the Western Cape. Her approach is always to create spaces
that embrace the terrain in a functional, sustainable and contextually appropriate manner, whilst introducing the clients needs into the design.

Company Profile
Outer Space Planning & Design cc. (OSPD) was founded in 1999 by Alan Cooper and Sam Mhlungu. Alan went on to establish Outer Space Landscape Architects (Pty) Ltd to create a platform for enabling staff ownership and vision.
We are proud to have designed many of South Africa’s largest and most popular urban parks namely Gillooly's Farm, Jukskei River Park, Boksburg Lake as well as the award-winning Spruitview Park.
Outer Space has also prepared landscape renovation plans for Lower Sabie Rest Camp in Kruger National Park as well as a visual analysis (Characterisation) for the Cradle of Humankind.
